What is detox?

Detox is short for detoxification or to detoxify.  There are a lot of reasons to detox, like getting rid of chemical substances such as alcohol, drugs, or even junk food.


Today, we are going to focus on the detoxification of junk food and such.


Why should I go on a detox?

Everyone has their own ideas of what a detox can do for their bodies, so you will have a specific reason in mind.  You might want to detox for weight loss, or because you feel bloated, or even to clear your skin.


A lot of us want to start a new diet and we feel a good old detox will help us start from square one.  Fresh and ready to go with a clean slate.


Let’s talk about what a detox is and what it isn’t.  After reading this article you’ll walk away with some great ideas and tips on the best way to detox.

How does detox work?

Alright, you’re probably finding pages that talk about celery juices or carrot juices that you have to drink for a few days straight.  This sounds not only boring and strict but also very harmful for you.


Your body does not need special detox juices.  Your body does not need special detox pills either. 


When you want to rid your body of harmful substances you have to add to it nutritious foods.  You don’t have to fast.  You can if you want to, but I wouldn’t fast for more than a day.  


There are too many myths and too much chatter all over the place telling you different things. Let’s forget what the media is selling us, and let’s go back to basics.


Your body comes fully equipped with an organ called the Liver. This quote from WebMD, “The liver's main job is to filter the blood coming from the digestive tract, before passing it to the rest of the body. The liver also detoxifies chemicals and metabolizes drugs.” explains it all in one go.  


You already have the most effective tool that will detox your body!  However, it does need a little help from your part.


I’m gonna say that again, Your liver will need a little help. From You.

What is the most effective way to detox?

The best way to help your liver out is by eating healthy foods. What types of healthy foods?  You can have a rich diet without junk food and not get bored!


These foods include 

  • Low sugar fruits like berries. If you like sweeter fruits, eat them earlier in the day only. 
  • Green leafy veggies like spinach, kale, lettuce, etc.
  • Veggies
  • If you like to eat meat, make sure it is lean cuts.


Water with lemon, oranges or other citrus fruits can help your liver further. *Note, do not confuse eating an orange with drinking orange juice.  Orange juice is bad news for many reasons.*

In short, you really only need to take away processed foods and junk food.  Then, add veggies and fruits.  Eating clean foods helps by reducing the amount of extra junk your body needs to process.  


If this sounds like a huge challenge, don’t worry.  You can alternate by eating how you normally eat every few days.

Will detox help me?

Detox will help you feel less bloated and less gassy in most cases.  When I have bad days of eating, I know that eating clean for a couple of days will help drastically.  My face is usually the first to “de-bloat”.


Your energy levels could be affected by your detox.  If you are starting to add exercise to your routine, or if you already exercise, you’ll see that you have a ‘cleaner’ energy.  I like to compare this to the cheap gas we put in our cars versus the premium top quality gas.  You can’t see the difference, but you can most definitely feel it.


As a side effect, you could even lose a few pounds.  You would have to track your body fat as well to see if some of that weight loss is fat loss.  Usually, if you lose weight through detox, water is what you lose. Not fat.


If you want to detox in the hopes that you will lose body fat, you will have to adopt a healthier long term eating habit. And add exercise to your daily routine.  There is no way around it.  80% of weight loss comes from what we eat. 20% of weight loss comes from exercise.  


Yes, you can reduce your calories drastically and not exercise and still lose weight.  But this is not the healthiest and long term solution.

Eggs, fruit, toast or oatmeal.

Protein-Packed Power Salad Recipe

Protein-Packed Power Salad

Today, I'm giving you not one, but TWO recipes!  It's a salad and dressing that can be made ahead of time and makes a great lunch. You can make this in a mason jar or other reusable container, and it will last for 2 days in the fridge.


Protein-Packed Power Salad

(serves 1)


• Baby spinach, 3 big handfuls

• 2 tablespoons of honey-mustard sauce (recipe below)

• 1 2.5 oz (70 g) pouch tuna in water

• 1/2 cup (80 g) drained and rinsed canned chickpeas

• 1 small carrot, grated

• 3 to 5 grape tomatoes, cut in half

Mix the spinach, dressing, tuna, chickpeas, carrot, and tomatoes in a bowl. Serve right away or keep well-covered for 2 days in the fridge.


Dressing with honey-mustard

(makes 8 tablespoons)


• 1 clove of garlic minced

• 1 Tbsp apple cider vinegar

• 1½ tsp Dijon mustard

• 1/2 teaspoon honey

• To taste, sea salt and freshly ground pepper (1-2 pinches each)

• ⅓ cup (80 ml) extra-virgin olive oil


In a small bowl, mix together the garlic, vinegar, mustard, honey, salt, and pepper. Whisk in the oil slowly.
